From Steam to Metro – The Evolution of Transport at the Central Hub

Not many stations in Britain showcase the evolution of public transport as clearly as this one. You can literally feel the ghosts of steam locomotives, the dying breath of the intercity diesel, and the smooth quiet whir of electric trains all under one roof, while a 21st Century Metro train hums away beneath your feet. It's a living, breathing textbook of railway history.

When the station first opened up back in 1850, the only sound you'd have heard would have been the hiss of high-pressure steam shooting out from the engines. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was always keen on efficiency, and its workshops in Gateshead and Darlington produced some of the most famous locomotives you can think of – the likes of the ‘Aerolite’ and the ‘Tenant’ 2-4-0s were rolling off the production lines. The original layout had 12 platforms, two of which were reserved for local services. And the massive roof on top was designed to let the black smoke escape with louvres that could be opened - although, funnily enough, photographs from the 1930s show it was almost permanently grey with soot.

The first big change came with electrification – but not for the main line, it was the suburban Tyneside electric network that got the treatment back in 1904. The NER were way ahead of the game, and they started running electric multiple units all the way out to the coast at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. These distinctive yellow-and-brown wooden carriages would chug out of dedicated platforms on the eastern side of the station, and for a little while there, Newcastle had an electric network that was the envy of the rest of the world.

Next up was the decline of steam. The 1955 Modernisation Plan came along and swept away the old order, by the mid sixties the last steam hauled passenger train was leaving the station, replaced by diesel multiple units and the iconic 'Deltic' diesel locomotives on the East Coast Main Line. The station had to adapt - water towers and coaling stages got the chop, the roof was cleaned free of soot, but war damage and years of neglect had taken their toll.

The most dramatic change arrived in the 80s with the Tyne and Wear Metro. Instead of London, where the Tube is separate and apart, the Metro planners did something clever - they re-used the old NER electric tunnels and routed the new light rail directly underneath the mainline station. In 1981, a new underground Metro station opened, connected to the main concourse by a couple of escalators and a long, white-tiled walkway. For the first time ever, a commuter arriving from London could step off an InterCity 125 and walk straight onto a Metro train heading for the coast or the airport without having to get outside. This sort of 'turn-up-and-go' integration was revolutionary in British rail.

These days the station is handling LNER, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, Lumo and Northern trains on the upper levels, while the Metro chugs along below. And something new is already on the horizon - full digital signalling and the arrival of the new 'Azuma' and 'Class 802' bi-mode trains that can switch seamlessly between electric overhead wires and diesel power. Newcastle Central is no museum piece; it's a fully functioning, 21st century transport hub that's been in continuous operation for over 170 years - and still managing to stay one step ahead.
